Imposter Syndrome

The symptoms described in CanWest News Service April 11, 2009 article by Caitlin Crawshaw entitled Imposter syndrome: fear of being found out sounds like they relate to the unmet need disease of worthiness.

  • nervous walking into job interviews and have fretted, once or twice, about a looming performance appraisal.
  • anxiously anticipating the day your boss (or an underling) discovers your incompetence
  • you suspect your success is the result of luck or deception – not hard work and talent

“Typically, imposter syndrome is present in the psyche of ambitious, high-achieving people,” said John Graden, author of The Impostor Syndrome. The higher up they go, the more the stress of being found out as an intellectual fraud is compounded.”

I have talked to countless financial advisors that sometime believe that they could be doing a better job for their clients. Most to the time their clients are completely satisfied. Alongside of this, the financial advisor privately reflects with something like “my client would leave me if they only knew how I was really feeling”.
