What Are You Doing To Keep Your Energy Up In The New Normal?

Plan · Play · Profit | March 2011

Welcome to the March 2011 edition of our Plan · Play · Profit E-Newsletter.

Monday March 14th’s float plane trip to Vancouver to speak at Pro-Seminars reminded me of when pitcher Orel Hershiser Won The World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988.

When the TV Reporter asked Orel at the end of the game what he was thinking standing on the pitcher’s mound he said “I was just singing hymns, I was just singing hymns” and you could say his pitching was divine as a result.

Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you are going to get and from where.

I caught an 8am Harbour Air float plane from Nanaimo Harbour to YVR South Terminal and then a taxi to the  Best Western in Richmond to speak at Pro-Seminars. Then I caught another taxi to Downtown Vancouver for a few meetings and then a 5pm float plane back to Nanaimo from Downtown Vancouver and I was at Penny’s Yoga Class with Laura at 6:15pm … a full, prosperous and rejuvenating day.

I was happy to re-connect with a long term client at Pro-Seminars and they invited me to have a conversation with them about the One Page Business Plan.

My newsletter continues after the following Free One Page Business Plan Offer:

A number of the audience members took the time to speak with me and one wise member shared a story that related to my presentation on the One Page Business Plan.

My One Page Business Plan speaking presentation was less about the requirement for a business plan and more about the expanded consciousness that the One Page Business Plan provides because it stops one from doing habitual repeated tactical thinking which sucks up our consciousness, focus and energy away from strategic thinking and game changing long term results.

The wise advisor shared a story about someone that had a job driving imported cars a very short distance off of the dock to a parking lot and as you can imagine there were thousands of these cars. The driver had to go on stress leave because they were near a nervous breakdown. The driver happened to talk with two of the Auto Manufacturing Executives and they told him to stop thinking … that habitual thinking was driving him crazy.

The wise advisor told me that he really enjoyed my presentation and wondered where I get the energy from. He said, “You probably never stop”.
I explained that this wasn’t the case, and that Laura and I spent ten days with three couples on a Catamaran sailing holiday in the British Virgin Islands in January of 2010, a week in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico in November 2010, that we were going back to Nuevo in April and back again to the BVIs in January 2012 for another Catamaran sailing holiday with the same crew. At the same time I explained my daily practices of meditation, and that Laura and I go to yoga 3 – 4 times per week.

The wise advisor said to me that the worst thing about old age is that you have less and less energy and you have to work at keep your energy up.

Many thanks to the wise advisor for sharing his heart based wisdom with me.
So to prevent habitual thinking about my pending Pro-Seminars speaking presentation which could have been very easy to do on Monday because 50% of the presentation was brand new, unrehearsed, and not yet delivered I sang my own hymns in the form of:
  • A journaling that I recommend to my clients to associate them to their values, actions, and the feelings that the values based actions create. Here is the journaling; I observe my values of Attraction, Currency/Energy, Encouragement, Partnering/People, Professionalism/Quality/Service, Sense/Wisdom, Teaching, Understanding/Empathy and Venture are being met as a result of speaking at Pro-Seminars and as a result I feel Certain, Committed and Confident and as a result I intend that the audience receive insights to help them meet and exceed their goals for 2011 and beyond.
  • Imagining a big clock right out in front of me with the numbers of 12, 3, 6, 9 and then I watch the sweep hand of the clock going round 12, 3, 6, 9 and along with this I recite the four key feelings that I want to experience of love, happiness, peace and joy while the sweep hand of the clock is going round through the numbers of 12, 3, 6, 9 and I’m confirming that I am using this strategy to get my energy and consciousness running or spinning in a positive direction and sure enough this strategy helps me to amplify and maintain my positive energy during the day and throughout the speaking presentation. Having said this, there isn’t a speaking presentation that goes by without someone coming up to me and saying, “I don’t know where you get your energy from. I wished that I had your kind of energy!”
The above practices accomplish a number of different things for me.
  • It prevents me from OCSPD – Obsessive Compulsive Speaking Preparation Disorder … I admit it, as I strive to make my financial advisor speaking presentations the best that they can be, it could be very easy to fall into an unconscious pattern going over the speaking presentation PowerPoints over and over again.
The practices focus me on adding value to the audience which is best accomplished with an Empty Mind coming from the heart with values and the feelings that they generate because the audience wants inspiration.
So with a successful One Page Business Plan financial advisor speaking presentation under my belt for Pro-Seminars, I set off in a taxi for Downtown Vancouver for 11am, 1:30pm and 3pm appointments.

I arrived early so I parked myself in a Starbucks Office to catch up with Laura and on e-mail.

Laura let me know that my 1:30pm appointment had e-mail to postpone as they were sick.

I thought back over the years in my old stomping grounds of downtown Vancouver and thought of the advisor clients that I had not seen in a while, ones that I had enough rapport with to contact for a very short notice appointment and I sent one e-mail to a client and friend that goes back to 1990 with the intention to follow up after my 11am appointment.

As I walked to the intersection to cross the street to my 11am appointment, I heard a familiar voice behind me and I looked back to see my friend Pat walking towards Starbucks with his client, and I called out to Pat and gave him a smile and a wave … serendipitous as we had a Skype conversation just the day before discussing the presentations that we were both working on.
My 11am appointment with an MGA firm that I have worked on and off with for the past 10 years went very well and it was centered around the theme of “I Didn’t Know You Did That” updating my client on the ways that I could add value to their firm and to the advisors that they serve and these are the ways:
  1. Coaching advisors via telephone on a one on one basis
  2. Coaching advisors via Webinars
  3. Facilitating advisor workshops at education days
  4. Facilitating team building workshops for corporate teams
  5. Speaking at education days
  6. Writing guest articles for their newsletter
I checked my e-mail after my 11am appointment to see if there was a reply from the one e-mail that I sent to the advisor client that I had not seen in a while and there wasn’t a reply.

Instead of phoning right away I started to walk towards my client’s office thinking that I would phone when I got a little closer to their office and as I was walking through the underground under Bentall Center where I ran into an associate of my client ( who is also a long-time client that was referred to me by the client that I was trying to reach ). They work in the same office and I brought the client up to date about wanting to reach his associate and they advised that the client that I wanted to reach was in their office.

This lead to a phone call and I was in the office in front of my long time client in a matter of minutes and it should be no surprise that we are working together again with the One Page Business Plan.

After that I took a break at you guessed it…. Starbucks.

During my break I re-energized with my practice in advance of my 3pm appointment … 12, 3, 6, 9 along with reciting the four key feelings that I want to experience of love, happiness, peace and joy.

My 3pm appointment was a first time appointment with a new MGA prospect thinking that a good place to start would be to have a conversation about speaking.

To my surprise, my new MGA prospect was thinking a lot bigger … 12, 3, 6, 9 … love, happiness, peace and joy.

What hymns are you singing?

Thank you for the opportunity to be of service.
