Many people are adamant that this economy is so much more different than past economic downturns.
Douglas Coupland’s Gloomageddon January 7th, 2009 Globe and Mail article offers reasons why this economic downturn may not be all that different than economic downturns in the past.
He reminds us that …
- While the doom and gloom of Y2K prophesies had an expiry date, they did not come to pass.
- The doom of the 1970’s, early 1980’s and the 2000’s tech bubble did pass and all opened the doorways to a bright future.
“Nothing has really changed, but everybody’s adrenalized, miserable and chomping at the bit for data – more data, please – all we want is more data. What’s going on here?”
It is my thought that the coping mechanisms of more everything including money, possessions and technology that we have been sold into using to cope with The Unmet Needs Disease has backfired on us and The Unmet Needs Disease is just getting worse.
Coupland’s parting comments are; “Remember: Capitalism is a robust system. Things really will get better. This will pass.”
