90 / 10 Thoughts About The Planning Process

It’s 10:40 PT and I`m just over half way into my second of three flights of the day from Vancouver to Calgary in advance of speaking at Advocis Winnipeg’s Education Day on April 13th.

Oh what luxury as I’m the only passenger in the emergency “leg room” row. I’m riding in the back of the bus to save the money and points to go on more important things like holidays with Laura like the one we are going on to Mexico on April 23rd. At the same time, I think that my sponsors prefer the back of the bus versus business class, taxis versus town cars and regular restaurant bills versus five stars. Nothing worse than trying to get hired as a speaker and wanting extra fees for your ego and entourage.

As always, on my way to a financial advisor speaking presentation, I’m refining in this case my Clear Your Roadblocks financial advisor speaking presentation.

This is a good thing as I have not looked at it since speaking last November at NAIFA-Iowa’s Sales Caravan which was a huge hit.

I’ve just run across a slide entitled with the following content:

Planning Process

  • 90% = Who You Are, Who You Need To Become & Why You Are Doing It
  • 10% = How, What, Where, When

I haven’t delivered the Clear Your Roadblocks financial advisor speaking presentation since last November because I’ve been developing and presenting a powerpoint on the One Page Business Plan.

Looking at the above Planning Process with the One Page Business Plan in my mind’s eye, I’m offering up this latest thought leading thinking.

If you don’t develop who you are by getting to know Who You Are, Who You Need To Become & Why You Are Doing It by defining your Values and creating Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies and Actions by creating a One Page Business Plan …

You will only produce about 10% of your capacity because you will likely be overwhelmed with everything in your mind endlessly going over How, What, Where and When.

The One Page Business Plan is made up of five components that answer the following questions:

  • Vision What are you building?
  • Mission Why does this business exist?
  • Objectives What result will we measure?
  • Strategies How will we build this company?
  • Action Plans What it the work to be done?
