100th Anniversary Of The United Nation’s International Women’s Day

The 100th Anniversary Of The United Nation’s International Women’s Day on March 8th caught my attention via a Saturday, March 5th Vancouver Sun article by Douglas Todd entitled The quest to stop men from dying young.

The quest to stop men from dying young resonated with me because of having received a stern warning from my doctor on December 22, 2010 about having high blood pressure.

Part of the reason for my high blood pressure  is just before my visit to the doctor, I had just hurled myself off the phone with a now past client that wanted me to continue working with them by reducing my fee by 50% and work with their partner at the same time … kind of like 2 for 1 and reduce your fee by 50%. I say hurled myself off the phone because I said “No” every which way that I could while the past client was doing their best to convince me that I should work with them for 2 for 1 and reduce your fee by 50%. I finally said something like “Thank you for the opportunity to work with you and there isn’t anything else that I can offer you. I’ve stated my fee and cannot reduce it. I trust that you can find a coach that can meet your needs for the fee that you wish to pay. Goodbye.”

My doctor’s stern warning wasn’t anything to be concerned about in the here and now, it was a warning that continuing with high blood pressure would cause me problems like a heart attack when I am 65.

The blood pressure warning was no surprise as high blood pressure is hereditary on my mother’s side and Irene made it to the ripe age of 90 and my father John lived until he was 85.

To play it safe and to meet the challenge cause I’m always up for a good challenge, Laura and I heeded the warning and took the following action that yielded me a congratulatory handshake and a “well done” from my doctor on February 14, 2011 for my low blood pressure.

• A look at my diet although there wasn’t anything that we could do as we already had a great diet

• A look at alcohol intake and there wasn’t anything to do there as I don’t drink

• A visit to the Pharmacy for Coenzyme Q10 and Salmon & Fish Oil

• A visit to the Naturopath for a consultation and Serenopro – a prostate concentrate – if you are male and over 50 this will curb the sensations of having to urinate in the middle of the night interrupting your sleep and causing your blood pressure to rise

• Committing to yoga three to four times a week – I used to think that there are no fat old me, now I think that there are no fat and inflexible old men

I have a loving wife that has a lot of common sense, a fantastic mother in law Helen who used to be a nurse and a deceased mother Irene who used to be a nurse and it is important to acknowledge that I have a lot of support and that I have had a lot of great support over the years.

Here is what stood out to me in Douglas Todd’s article and click here for the entire article;

• Women’s health research receives more than double the funding allocated to men’s health

• Canadian men die on average four to six years younger than women

• Of Canadians who live into their 90s, he says, women outnumber men eight to one

• The four main sources of men’s premature death rates in Canada:

1. Cardiovascular disease, from which middle-aged Canadian men die at a rate more than three times higher than women;

2. Suicide, from which men die at a rate three to four times higher than women;

3. Motor vehicle accidents, from which men die three times more than young women;

4. Workplace accidents, with men being the victims of more than 97 per cent of all workplace deaths.

• Men have fewer social supports, and they are more averse to preventive behaviours such as exercise, nutrition and moderate drinking.

• Men’s inferior health have generally been greeted with “resignation,” as something to be accepted rather than addressed.

• The major priority for men’s health research in Canada should be cardiovascular disease, followed by suicide prevention. The specific focus of the latter should be: “Why is the suicide rate in Canada highest for middle-aged men?”

• Innovative ways need to be found to engage men toward healthier behaviour, including controlling risky drinking and dealing more effectively with dark moods. A few new educational programs are now underway in B.C., including the website www.aboutmen.ca

The Roadmap to Men’s Health outlines how previous medical researchers accused men of following unhealthy masculine values, such as winning, keeping emotions under control, taking risks, aggression, frequently changing sex partners, dominance, the primacy of work and the pursuit of status.

• They also point out how such labelling of men can easily lead to “blaming the victim,” in much the same way women were dismissed 50 years ago for not being as capable as men in the workplace.

• Lastly, the authors worry that overemphasizing some of the negative things associated with traditional masculinity will simply turn men off, by shaming them. By asking them to “apologize for being men.”
