It’s 6am Wednesday morning in Banff and Laura and I are heading to Calgary, Laura is flying home and I’m flying to Ottawa to speak first thing Thursday morning to Advocis Ottawa.
Yesterday’s financial advisor speaking presentation at the Funeral Plans-Canada 11th Anniversary/Annual Conference was a hit. Not because the presentation was excellent but because of the values that Funeral Plans-Canada are made of. The Funeral Plans-Canada team and their associates are extremely genuine and they really care about what they do. More to follow in a forthcoming blog.

My November 4th financial advisor speaking presentation was entitled How To Thrive In A Recession 3.0 which I invested over 50 hours in creating. I did this because I refused to deliver the same presentation as I had delivered How To Thrive In A Recession 1.0 for The Independent Financial Brokers Toronto Summit in May of 2008.
Creating the 3.0 version was in the midst of completing the book, tradeshow both and web site.
The bottom line is I didn’t have the time to rehearse the November 4th presentation and barely had the time to finish it as I was working on the PowerPoint on the flight to Toronto.
Breaking a cardinal rule, to NOT fly the day before I speak in Ontario, buying into the scarcity thoughts about this economy, to save the costs of a Sunday flight and an extra hotel, I flew the day before I spoke, and spoke with less than 5 hours sleep with jet lag without rehearing the presentation.
I believe that my delivery was good but not great, my timing was off and I wasn’t on top of my material and all of this helped to create a misinterpretation of my intention for some people.
Before I share the comments that I received through the grapevine, and without defending, I took a risk in the How To Thrive In A Recession 3.0 and talked about two different types of financial advisors:
- Financial survivors that are stuck
- Financial advisors that are leaders
The following blogs expand on financial survivors that are stuck and financial advisors that are leaders:
- Financial Survivor Or Financial Advisor? Part 1 of 3.
- Financial Survivor Or Financial Advisor? Part 2 of 3.
- Financial Survivor Or Financial Advisor? Part 3 of 3.
I got the feeling in advance of the delivery that I was running the risk of being the messenger that was going to get shot talking to financial survivors that are stuck because one can either own it and do something about it or shoot the messenger.
Here are the bullets from running the risk of getting shot that I received through the grapevine after the presentation; “too much of a sales pitch”, “too much marketing”, “too sales focused on his services”, “too busy selling his own program” and “I think he was trying to get too much in and didn’t explain anything fully”.
For what it is worth, the few minutes that I took in the November 4th presentation to talk about my product was no different than in the November 5th presentation where all the comments were positive.
I guess that goes back to me wanting to talk to advisors about committing to their business versus just going through the motions which were easy in a bull market. This new economy is an end to living off the fat of the bull and causing those financial advisors that stay in the business to learn how to work.
Here are some of the financial advisor speaking testimonials that we received from my November 4th and 5th financial advisor speaking presentations for The Independent Financial Brokers Toronto Summit.
