5:30am, Monday, July 14, 2008 and I’m starting the day with getting my office reorganized as my main computer is still in the shop and it is Book Week and my goal is to review and comment on the editor’s version of the edited book by the end of the week.
A note to my blessed clients – it is Book Week and I am away from e-mail and the phone and will not be available unless it is an emergency.
As you know, Mondays are always challenging for all of us getting out of summer weekend mode especially for us, now that summer has finally hit the Wet Coast.
I’m writing this Blog to myself to keep myself on track and you are welcome to join in the festivities.
8:15am Completed getting my 6 year old Acer Laptop up an running with the latest Windows Updates and Printer Drivers so that I can run it side by side with my Gateway Tablet PC with the Original Book on the Acer and Edited Book from my editor on Gateway so that I can do a side by side comparison.
Comparison it not really the right word. I’m working on tracking what is in the edited version, what has been moved to a different place in the book and what has been deleted … all of this is surrendering ( somewhat ) to the wisdom of my editor.
All I have to do is catch up as I have had my coaching brain running full speed last week and now that I have gotten this make shift computer of two laptops running I’m working on installing my writing brain … or is that my left brain?
8:35am Now associated to where I left off with the editing review from two weeks ago and clear about where to start today. This was a little tricky because all my editing work is on the main computer that is still in the shop. I must say that getting re-associated to where I was in the editing review was relatively easy. So I have two chapters reviewed and ready to send my comments to my editor.
Maybe the rest of this will be really easy. Perhaps I have already completed what for me was a tough go doing an editing review of the first two chapters. This was because my blessed editor moved everything around for the better.
10:15am Three quarters of the way through Chapter 3.
11:10am Reviewed Chapter 3 and am ready to write my comments to my editor.
I gained a lot of experience from writing yesterday’s Blog entitled Perfection Obsession, Mental Illness & Financial Services Workers Seek Treatment Mash. The Blog is a Mash Up of different ideas and the process of editing is having my first Mash Up ( book ) along side of the Mash Up ( book editing from the editor ) and going through the Mash. Well maybe my book was a Mash Up, kind of like mashed potatoes but my editor’s version looks like Fine Dining.
12:30pm Finished my review of Chapter 4. I’ve decided to hold off on writing my written comments to my editor until the end of my review of the editing of the complete book because I may pick up some additional comments as I go through future chapters that relate to early chapters. The other reason is I am still waiting for my main computer and my notes for the review of Chapters 1 & 2 are on the main computer.
1:10pm Back from lunch and onto Chapter 5. I am thinking of working right into the evening.
1:15pm Note to my editor.
Hi Linda,
I’ve been working since first thing this morning as promised and I am just starting Chapter 5. I am holding off with my comments until I complete the whole thing. Part of the reason is I had a power surge and even with surge protectors, I lost everything except the data and my work on the first two chapters and the workbook are on the main computer. I was planning on finishing the workbook today but I can’t because of the computer problem so I am onto the book.
I am glad that I did the work on the first two chapters two weeks ago because it is making a lot easier to understand and appreciate the work that you are doing.
Onward, upward.
Simon
2:45pm Chapter 5 went smoothly and I am well on my way into Chapter 6. The edited version of the book really has a great vibration as it really flows.
3:50pm Chapters 6 though 8 are completed. I was fairly liberal with my review of Chapters 6 through 8 because most of the work can come through my comments to my editor.
I’m ready to start sending my comments to my editor but alas, I can’t as my main computer is still in the shop and they are still working on trying to match a new mother board and all the other pieces to the RAID Mirrored Hard Drives that I have. While the computer technicians are making progress, no one can tell how long it is going to take … it will be ready when it is ready.
4:00pm On the phone with Simon Parsons to ask him if he can find the book documents that were on my main computer by going on-line to the Storegrid on-line back up system that Simon manages for us.
4:39pm All the book documents that I was looking for are safe and sound on my tablet PC!
5:15pm I just finished editing and posting this Blog.
Given that I am a morning person and my energy is 10 x better I am going to get a fresh start Tuesday.
All I have to do is clean up the mess.
